What Is It Like Living in Patagonia Chile? | Life as a Mountain Guide
What is it really like living in Patagonia Chile?

It’s not just about landscapes or adventure — it’s a life shaped by nature, discipline, and constant adaptation.

Since 2013, I’ve lived in Ensenada, at the base of the Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes. What started as a coincidence became a long-term commitment to living in one of the wildest regions on Earth.

🌋 Living Between Volcanoes

Living near active volcanoes changes your perspective.

In 2015, Calbuco erupted after decades of inactivity. The sky turned dark with ash, the region was evacuated, and daily life stopped completely.

👉 experiences like this redefine your relationship with nature.

In Patagonia, the landscape is not static — it is alive.

🌿 Nature and Conservation in Patagonia

This region is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its biodiversity and ecological importance.

It is also the starting point of the Route of Parks of Patagonia, a large-scale conservation initiative protecting vast areas of forest, rivers, and mountains.

👉 living here means understanding that nature is not just scenery — it is a system to be respected.

🧗 Life as a Mountain Guide in Patagonia

Being a mountain guide in Patagonia is both a privilege and a responsibility.

I guide people through landscapes shaped by:

  • volcanic activity
  • glaciers
  • dense temperate rainforest

But the goal is not only reaching a summit.

👉 it is helping people understand what it means to be in this environment.

🧠 Discipline and Mental Strength

Life in Patagonia requires discipline.

  • long winters
  • isolation
  • physical demands

My background as a competitive rower taught me:

  • resilience
  • focus
  • consistency

👉 these same skills are essential in mountaineering and guiding.

🏡 Daily Life in Patagonia

Daily life is simple, but demanding.

  • mornings on the farm
  • caring for animals
  • constant training
  • preparing for expeditions

👉 it’s a balance between routine and unpredictability.
🧊 From Patagonia to Antarctica

This lifestyle extends into my work in the Brazilian Antarctic Program.

There, conditions are even more extreme:

  • cold
  • isolation
  • technical environments

👉 Patagonia becomes the foundation for operating in these conditions.

⚠️ The Reality of Living in Patagonia

Living here is not romantic all the time.

  • weather is unpredictable
  • logistics are complex
  • isolation is real

👉 but this is exactly what creates a deeper connection with the environment.

🏔️ Why Live in Patagonia Chile?

Patagonia is one of the last truly wild regions on Earth.

It offers:

  • raw nature
  • solitude
  • real adventure

👉 not for everyone — but for those who seek it, unmatched.
